BitRouter vs OpenRouter
Compare a hosted model marketplace with an open-source router you can run, inspect, and adapt to your workload.
OpenRouter built this category. One key, a very broad hosted catalog — if you've ever swapped providers without rewriting a line of code, that's largely their doing. We've learned plenty from them, and for a lot of teams they're still the right answer.
We're not trying to out-catalog them. BitRouter is a bet that the interesting problem has moved: not how many models can you reach, but which one should this particular call go to — and who owns the layer making that call. That's harder to build and slower to prove. It's the thing we want to build.
Where we're genuinely different
You can run the whole thing yourself. BitRouter is Apache 2.0, top to bottom — bro start and the router lives in your VPC, your CI, or your laptop. OpenRouter is a hosted service. Self-hosting BitRouter keeps the routing policy, provider credentials, and request path in infrastructure you control.
Self-hosted BYOK has no BitRouter inference fee. Your provider bills you directly and BitRouter does not meter the request for payment. OpenRouter's hosted platform and BYOK allowances vary by plan; check its current pricing instead of treating a fee quoted here as permanent. BitRouter Cloud is a separate managed option with prices shown in the live model catalog.
The router learns your workload. Every gateway can pick a model. BitRouter runs an act → observe → evaluate → learn cycle over your actual runs, so routing tightens with every request instead of following a preset someone else tuned. That's the whole product — not a feature bolted onto a catalog.
When OpenRouter is the better call
You want the broadest hosted catalog. OpenRouter's catalog is broader than BitRouter Cloud's deliberately curated agentic and coding set. With BitRouter you can still bring your own model, local or remote, but that is different from having every model available on one hosted account.
You want free models. OpenRouter surfaces free options for some models; BitRouter Cloud does not currently offer a free-model tier. If free hosted inference is a requirement, that is a concrete reason to choose OpenRouter.
You need deeper enterprise tooling. OpenRouter has more of it built out today. If there's a requirement we don't meet, see team pricing and tell us about the gap — we'd rather hear it than guess at it.
