AGENTS.md

Give coding agents repository instructions while keeping discovery and execution under the selected harness.

1 min readEdit this page

AGENTS.md is a Markdown file for repository-specific instructions: project layout, build commands, conventions, and validation steps. Put shared guidance at the repository root; nested files can supply directory-specific guidance in harnesses that support them.

Write project instructions

Keep instructions concrete and check commands against the current checkout. For example:

# Project instructions

## Layout
Application code lives in src/; documentation lives in docs/.

## Setup
Install dependencies with pnpm install --frozen-lockfile.

## Validation
Run pnpm test after changing application behavior.

## Conventions
Preserve unrelated changes. Keep credentials out of committed files.

Harness ownership

When using an external coding agent through BitRouter, that harness determines instruction discovery, nesting, precedence, and loading. Model routing does not establish a shared instruction-loading contract across adapters. Check the selected harness's documentation; OpenCode's rules guide describes its project and global files.

Instructions, skills, and permissions

Use AGENTS.md for project guidance and Agent Skills for reusable workflows. Tool execution still follows headless approval policies; writing an instruction does not grant credentials or authorize an action.
